In this presentation a Lighting Designer and a Controls Integrator discuss the evolving world of lighting and controls.

Achieving the intent and full functionality of modern lighting designs requires a much higher level of control than systems of the past. Just meeting basic energy codes generally requires some level of switching and/ or dimming control which often has to be integrated with sensors or other building systems. Not to mention the array of control protocols and devices which come into play when we start incorporating color-changing fixtures, moving lights, pixel mapping, and other more “theatrical” elements into our designs.

Topics will include the nature of Lighting Design in this climate of advance controls, particularly interactive lighting; what Designers should know about controls; specifying control intent; the role of a Lighting Controls System Integrator, Controls Specialist, Manufacturer’s Reps, and Manufacturers; what startup and programming are and how those two things differ; and what you should think about in terms of maintenance and support to ensure your design continues to perform as intended.
